Hostels in Catania - Günstige Unterkunft in Catania
Nach Palermo ist Catania die zweitgrößte Stadt Siziliens. Die zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe zählende spätbarocke Stadt liegt an der Ostküste der Insel. Catania blickt zurück auf eine lange Geschichte des Aufbaus und der Zerstörung als griechischer Handelshafen, landwirtschaftliches Zentrum der Araber und barocker Großbaustelle, nachdem der rund 30 km entfernt gelegene Vulkan Ätna die Stadt 1669 bei einem Ausbruch teilweise unter Lava begrub. Vieles wurde aus Lavagestein gebaut, auch das Wahrzeichen der Stadt, die Elefantenstatue auf der Piazza Duomo ist daraus gefertigt und überdauert seit dem 13. Jahrhundert. Das Stadtbild ist stark barock geprägt und so tragen auch die meisten Kirchen und Palazzi monumentale Fassaden. Die Religiosität der Einwohner Catanias und ganz Siziliens zeigt sich jedes Jahr im Februar, bei den Feierlichkeiten zu Ehren der Hl. Agatha, einem der größten Ereignisse Siziliens, zu denen Hunderttausende erscheinen. Ein weltlicheres Spektakel ist das Festival Cantica im November, bei dem sich alles Musik, besonders sizilianische Musik, dreht. Für die Übernachtung in Catania bieten sich besonders Hotels unterschiedlicher Preisklassen an.
