| Um die Gründung ranken sich Legenden: es soll Lakshmi, die Göttin des Glücks und der Schönheit gewesen sein, die vor über 1000 Jahren dem König Gunakama Deva befahl, zwischen den Flüssen Bagmati und Vishnumati eine Stadt zu bauen. Ob es stimmt oder nicht schön ist Kathmandu auch im 21. Jahrhundert, und glücklich werden Reisende hier garantiert. Tradition und Fortschritt fließen in der Hauptstadt zusammen, die das kulturelle und politische Zentrum Nepals ist. Im historischen Kern Durbar Marg, dem ehemaligen Königsplatz, kann man sich kaum satt sehen an all den hinduistischen Tempeln, die Vishnu und Shiva gewidmet sind. Um den Taleju-Tempel tummeln sich Rikschas, Händler, heilige Kühe und Mönche in orangenen Gewändern. Das geheimnisvolle Kumari Bahal, das Haus der lebenden Göttin wird von steinernen Löwen bewacht; hier residiert ein junges Mädchen bis zur Pubertät, um danach als Normalsterbliche das Haus zu verlassen und Platz für eine neue Göttin zu machen. In Kathmandu steht die Zeit still, möchte man fast glauben. Zumindest, bis man den quirligen Bezirk Thamel im Norden gesehen hat, wo zwischen extrem günstigen Hostels und Bars vor allem Vergnügen angesagt ist. |
