Promenade in der Mittelmeerstadt NizzaIm Süden von Frankreich, direkt am Mittelmeer, liegt Nizza. In der Hafenstadt unweit der italienischen Grenze leben rund 350.000 Nizzaer oder französisch Niçois. Ihr okzitanischer Dialekt, das Nissart, ist nicht nur in den Gassen und auf den Märkten der Stadt zu hören, sondern auch im Umland von Nizza. Etwa in den Weinbergen von Bellet oder in den prominenten Nachbarstädten der Côte d'Azur wie Cannes und Monaco.
Kulturell wartet Nizza mit Museen der Extraklasse auf. Das Spektrum reicht vom Musée International d'Art Naif Anatole Jakovsky, in dem u.a. Degas und Manet ausgestellt werden, bis zum Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain, in dem Christo, Lichtenstein und Warhol zu sehen sind. Marc Chagall und Henri Matisse haben mit dem Musée Message Biblique und dem Musée Matisse jeder eine eigene Kunstsammlung.
In der Altstadt von Nizza erwarten den Besucher gut erhaltene Barockbauten. Darunter sind auch einige Kirchen wie die Kathedrale Sainte Réparate, Saint-Martin-Saint-Augustin oder Église la Miséricorde. Im Palais Communal war einst das Rathaus untergebracht. Über der Altstadt erhebt sich der Schlosshügel Colline du Château, auf dem heute nur noch die Ruinen der 1706 abgetragenen Zitadelle von Nizza zu besichtigen sind. Am Berg Cimiez wurden weit ältere Ruinen freigelegt - hier hinterliessen die Römer Reste einer alten Siedlung.
Zur Neustadt geht es über die nach Turiner Vorbild gestalteten Plätze Garibaldi und Masséna. Hier reihen sich Luxushotels wie das Grand Hotel Negresco, edle Appartments und Villen aus der Zeit der Belle Epoque aneinander. Südlich liegt die Promenade des Anglais, die alljährlich im Februar zum Zentrum des lokalen Karneval wird. Floral geschmückte Motivwagen des Blumenkorso ziehen dann diese Prachtstraße entlang. Während dieser Zeit ist jedoch eigentlich ganz Nizza ein Meer aus Blumen. Ein Besuch der Stadt in Südfrankreich lohnt sich also nicht nur in den mediterranen Sommermonaten, sondern auch im Winter.
