Salzburg ist mit 150.378 Einwohnern nach Wien, Graz und Linz die viertgrößte Stadt Österreichs. Berühmt ist die Salzburg auch als Geburtsstadt von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, der hier mehr als die Hälfte seines Lebens verbrachte. Sie besitzt besonders mit der Altstadt und dem Raum um Schloss Hellbrunn eine besonders lange kulturelle Tradition, sodass die gesamte Altstadt auch 1996 von der UNESCO in die Liste des Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen worden ist. Weltweit einzigartig ist hier auch Schloss Hellbrunn mit seinem Schlossgarten, den Wasserspielen und dem Landschaftsgarten um die alte Hellbrunner Allee. Aber mindestens genauso sehenswert sind die historischen Kirchen der einstigen Vororte, besonders die Pfarrkirchen von Morzg, Liefering, Maxglan, Gnigl und Aigen. In der Altstadt befindet sich u.a. auch: der älteste Straßentunnel Österreichs (Sigmundstor), der älteste mittelalterliche Wasserstollen Mitteleuropas (Almkanal), die größte erhaltene Burg Mitteleuropas (Festung Hohensalzburg), die weltweit älteste erhaltene Standseilbahn (Reißzug), die weltweit besterhaltenen Renaissance-Wasserspiele (Wasserspiele Hellbrunn) und die weltweit älteste erhaltene Allee (Hellbrunner Allee).
