| Die Provinzhauptstadt Verona liegt am Ende der Brenner-Linie in der Poebene. Die erst spät römisch gewordene Stadt erlangte große politische und wirtschaftliche Macht - davon zeugen noch heute Monumente wie die Arena, ein in das Stadtbild integriertes Amphitheater, das zu Aufführungszwecken genutzt wird. Der Triumphbogen Arco dei Gavi wurde 1932 wiederentdeckt und aufgebaut. Verona besitzt ein mittelalterliches Zentrum mit einer Burg aus dem 14. Jahrhundert sowie den berühmtesten Balkon der Literaturgeschichte, den die Veronesen angeblich als touristische Romea-und-Julia-Attraktion selbst angebracht haben. Weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten sind die diversen Kirchen verschiedenster Architekturstile sowie Ausgrabungsstätten aus der Römerzeit. Nach dem Stadtrundgang lädt das Hinterland Veronas, und dabei besonders das Etsch-Tal, zum Wandern ein. Der Gardasee lockt aus dem Westen mit seinem klaren Wasser. Ein Zugfahrt nach Mailand oder Venedig dauert auch höchstens 90 Minuten, so dass man rechtzeitig für ein günstiges Abendessen an der Arena und einen guten Wein in einer Bar in der Via Duomo zurück ist. Eine stilvolle und doch günstige Unterkunft bietet die Pension Villa Francescatti. |
